Redevelopment

Manor Estate

As previously mentioned, from a designing out crime perspective, Manor Estate is the biggest problem in Starley Cross so consequently needs the most change. By knocking down and redesigning the estate we aim to create a better community where people of any background can live a crime free life in a safe area. A community is important as then residents can recognise strangers or those who belong.

When we rebuild the estate, we will focus on implementing natural surveillance, defensible space and territoriality. Our intention is to demolish the high-rise building and build affordable terraced houses in its place. Terraced houses are excellent at increasing natural surveillance as they all face each other, and everyone will have an immediate neighbour. As well as this they will have front and back gates along with high fences separating properties. This will give clear boundaries between private and public space, aiding with territoriality. They new terrace houses will be a lot more aesthetically pleasing than the high-rise block, hopefully increasing manor estates reputation.

Starley Green

This terrace design will only work if properties are maintained to a good standard. As this will expensive for the council, we aim to create community groups that use individual’s skills to upkeep the buildings themselves. As the properties will also be brand new, we hope that residents will take responsibility upon themselves to care for their homes.

Starley Green is also an area of concern and is prone to loitering youths and high levels of vandalism, making it an unappealing place to visit. Our aim is to rejuvenate Starley Green and to make it the beating heart of the town. We will do this by splitting the Green up into sections.

The first section will become Starley Green allotments. These allotments will be cheap to build and will be maintained almost entirely by the community. They will be available to residents of Starley Cross to rent for a small fee. The allotments will not only bring people together but also as residents will be able to grow their own produce, it may financially help households with lower incomes. (Iles, 2005). Another benefit of the allotments is it will provide a new place for the school to visit or hold extracurricular activities outside of school time. A key code will be required to enter making it a semi-private area. It is also looked over by many properties making it ideal for natural surveillance. The second part of Starley Green will be turned into a children’s play park. This will turn the green into a more child friendly area and provide parents with the opportunity to meet other parents and form social bonds. The final section of Starley Green will be kept as an open space and will provide a venue for community events to be held outdoors.
